American Family Insurance (also known as AmFam) was formed in 1927 by Herman Wittwer as an auto insurance company for farmers. The company started as Farmers Mutual Insurance Company (FMIC) – not to be confused with Farmers Insurance Group. Wittwer believed farmers had a lower risk than urban motorists, as they did not drive as much and did not drive in the winter. As time went on, FMIC’s customer base expanded, as did the needs of its policyholders. With that in mind, in 1963, the company name changed to American Family Mutual Insurance Company to reflect the changes and diversity of its base.
AmFam introduced homeowners insurance in 1958, changing its scope of insurance policy offerings. Today, AmFam provides custom insurance packages, ranging from standard homeowners policies, including coverage from hail, wind, fire, leaking roofs, tornadoes, and more, to custom policies that can include earthquake, sewer backup, or flood insurance. Regardless of your needs, American Family Insurance has you covered.
