What is an ICC Certified Roofing Contractor, and What Does it Mean for a Homeowner?

The International Code Council (ICC) is a nonprofit association that provides a wide range of building safety solutions, including product evaluation, accreditation, certification, codification, and training. It develops model codes and standards used worldwide to construct safe, sustainable, affordable, and resilient structures.

The International Code Council is not a licensing agency. A contractor will need to apply for and be granted a contractor license in a city, county, or state that participates with the Code Council and requires the company to take and pass a Code Council examination.

National Standard Roofing Contractor ICC Exam

Metro City Roofing is proud to have earned the ICC National Standard Roofing certification. The specific ICC certification details for roofing is the Contractor/Subcontractor Exam F14, based on the 2015 International Building Code (IBC) and 2015 International Plumbing Code (IPC). Plumbing is included with roofing, as roofing includes waterproofing to protect your home or commercial building.

Passing the ICC exam and earning this certification requires months of rigorous studies and passing a 3 ½ hour examination. This exam certification is required for several Colorado Front Range counties and jurisdictions to offer roofing licenses, including Aurora, Littleton, Fort Collins, and Colorado Springs. Roofing licenses are required to obtain a roof permit at each specific property.

A fly-by-night “Chuck in a Truck” roofer does not typically invest to earn this prestigious ICC certification.

ICC History

The International Code Council was established in 1994 to develop a single set of national model construction codes in the United States. The ICC combined three different US organizations with three separate sets of codes. These organizations were the Building Officials and Code Administrators International, Inc. (BOCA), International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), and Southern Building Code Congress International, Inc. (SBCCI).
